At the core of playing World of Warcraft are addons to customize your experience. Addons have been around since the days of Classic and they have only gotten more intricate. There are so many out there that no person could reasonably use all of them. But that’s the beauty of it. Addons are as personal as your experience, and you can customize nearly every bit of gameplay with them.

Here we list some of the best and most useful addons for anyone. Whether you’re a competitive raider or a casual player, all of these addons will improve your quality of life when playing WoW.

Boss Mods

Boss mods have been around since vanilla WoW and fights these days are built around having them installed — even LFR. The fights are so complex that you flat out need a way to track everything that’s going on, so that you know which abilities are coming up and what mechanics you have to do. Boss mods offer all sorts of advantages from alerts to ability timers to audio cues. For players who rely on audio a lot, like healers focusing on health bars, there are voice packs that will turn the visual warnings into voice warnings.

Your choice of boss mod doesn’t particularly matter, since they all work with each other, and generally get the same message across. However, using something different than the rest of your raid can cause issues with more advanced fights. On Mythic Archimonde, we had issues where the two main boss mods were trying to deal with the soaking mechanic in different ways, disrupting the careful dividing of the groups and pointing players in opposite directions.

Boss mods work right out of the box, but I always recommend going into the settings and customizing the individual boss encounter alerts to what you personally need in order to prevent information overload. Sometimes the mechanic warnings will use the same alert sound which can make them blend together. If you need to pay attention to one in particular, such as when to move, it helps if you go in to change the alert to something you’ll notice.

Unit Frames

  • Grid2 + Clique

These are integral for any healer, and useful for other roles as well. Unit frames allow you to completely customize how you see your raid members’ statuses — what health they’re at, who is dead or alive, who has a resurrection or summon pending, buffs and debuffs, what can be dispelled, raid markers, threat indicators, incoming heals, and so on. For healers, unit frames cut down on the response time for healing, both by applying heals directly to the target via click-to-heal or mouseover mechanics, and by showing you what heals are already in effect. Unit frame addons can seem daunting to set up, but once they are, I promise it’s worth it.

The standard unit frames have come a long way, but they still pale in comparison to the functionalities of unit frame addons. I’ve included the most popular unit frame addons for healing that are routinely updated.

WeakAuras

WeakAuras is undoubtedly one of the most useful addons in the game, and as such deserves its own category. Even if you have nothing else, WeakAuras is worth it. The name comes from another addon during Wrath of the Lich King, PowerAuras, which was used to create custom visual alerts. When Power Auras stopped being updated, WeakAuras popped up to take its place. Officially it’s “WeakAuras 2” since the author of the first version stopped supporting it and other authors stepped up to keep the addon going.

Best rotation addon for wow

The great thing about WeakAuras is that you can create anything. Some people make entire UIs out of it, some people add just a couple auras to track some of their important procs. And then there are works of awe that people create to solve specific boss mechanics.

With WeakAuras the possibilities are endless. They can be triggered to only appear under certain conditions, like a particular talent, your health pool, or an encounter ID. You can make you own, which I did for many years before there was a central repository, or download auras created by others on Wago. There is also a client application that will keep your WeakAuras from Wago updated automatically — very important when they are raid encounter auras or you use a set maintained by an author.

WeakAuras can aid in just about every element of the game. Many players use auras to better show their spell cooldowns or procs. With every raid tier, someone will make a set of auras to show the most important mechanics of each fight. And if you ever get a new trinket or try out a new Azerite trait that you want to track more efficiently, simply type in the name on Wago. I guarantee you’ll find several options immediately.

Damage Meters

Damage meters can be controversial due to toxicity that happens when players perceive “underperformers,” but they are very useful when you know how to use them correctly — much like any tool. Proper evaluation will always come from using Warcraft Logs, but damage meters allow you to analyze you and your team’s gameplay while in the raid.

Rotation

Details! is one of the most popular damage meter addons and it has really stepped up its game with offering good analysis on the fly. Its sheer amount of options sets it alone. Besides recounting damage for each fight, and other things like healing, dispels, or interrupts, the addon has a fight breakdown button after every boss wipe. It includes a summary of damage taken, enemy damage taken, death log, phases, and the encounter timeline. You can also click on the damage meters to see a spell breakdown for every player, as well as compare players.

One neat feature is the ability to set your own nickname to show up to other Details users, as seen above. We’ve had everything from a former member passive-aggressively setting their nickname as “Last chance” right before they gquit, to raiders setting their names as each other to confuse everyone.

Skada has long been another popular and viable damage meter addon. I used for a long time until just recently when I dropped it for Details! (because the “hide meters when solo” option never actually worked properly).

Quality of life addons

Let’s face it, the Auction House is a mess. And it will likely stay that way until Blizzard completely revamps it. In the meantime, there are addons that will make it easier to traverse the Auction House. My personal favorite is Auctionator. It’s lightweight but also allows for easy listing when I’m selling. It records auction history and listing history so you can see what you have posted items at before. And when you’re buying something, it neatly consolidates all auctions so you can see lowest prices and how many stacks.

No more logging in and out trying to find certain items on your alts. Altoholic will tell you in the tooltips how much you have of that item, what characters they’re located on, and if there are any in guild banks you have access to. You can also check and compare the status of your alts like what gear they’re wearing, their reputations, and everything in their bags and bank from the interface. But the most convenient feature is the mail warning. It warns you if any mail in your characters’ mailboxes is ticking down and about to expire so you don’t have to worry about losing anything important.

System Options

A while back, Blizzard got rid of interface options, in an effort to “simplify” the game for newer players. They didn’t remove them completely, just from the visible UI, and they’re still available through the CVar options. These addons bring them back and make swapping addons easier.

  • AdvancedInterfaceOptions: This addon gives you access to all the options that were removed from the UI. Personally, I use it for extending the camera distance and turning off the map fading when you’re moving.
  • DejaCharacterStats: It’s like AdvancedInterfaceOptions, but it adds back all the missing character information like mount speed.
  • Addon Control Panel: Not only does this make it so that you don’t have to log out to turn addons on or off, but it also allows you to save profiles for addon sets.

Hopefully this list of addons helps you out. There are so many more out there, which you can find at Curseforge to fit just about any need. What are some of your favorite addons?

World of Warcraft Shadowlands introduced a large variety of new content and features. From adventure missions to soulbinds, conduits, and covenants, there is a lot to keep track of. In this article, I want to share some addons which will help you with Shadowlands specific features. In a future post, I will talk about all the addons I recommend for Shadowlands, but for now, we are going to look at addons for the new content added in Shadowlands.

Since it is still early in the expansion, many of these addons will evolve and new addons will be added. I will do my best to keep this list updated.

If you are a WeakAuras user, you may also be interested in my article on Shadowlands specific WeakAuras.

Adventure Missions

Covenant Mission Success Estimates

The first addon on our list is Covenant Mission Success Estimates. This nifty little addon places a box below the adventure window after selecting a mission.

As you place units on the board it calculates the number of rounds for your team to win or lose. It does this by looking at the attack damage values of the units and health. However, it doesn’t take special abilities into account, so beware.

If you place a weak team, you will see red text indicating that “Mission success is impossible with your current units.”

If you place a strong team, the text turns green and the addon indicates that you have a pretty good chance of winning the battle.

There are still a lot of unknowns about how to build the best teams on the adventure table. For now, Covenant Mission Success Estimates is a helpful tool to give you a basic idea of how your team stacks up. I imagine that we will see more adventure table addons popup as we get deeper into the expansion.

Conduits

ConduitHelper

ConduitHelper is a simple addon. It adds conduit rank to your tooltips and tells you whether you have learned it yet. I have found it helpful when looking at available world quests as it helps me target conduits that I haven’t collected yet.

Soulbind Conduit Manager

Soulbind Conduit Manager is a great little addon that allows you to save different conduit setups for reuse later. After installing this addon, it will add a small grey box to the right of your soulbind trees.

You can then type the name of a new preset into the box and press the red plus sign. This will create an empty preset. To assign a path to it, you activate the tree you want to save and then hold the Ctrl key and click on the empty preset.

You can delete unused presets by holding shift and clicking on them.

Best Dps Addon For Wow

Once you have saved your different paths, you can switch between them by left-clicking on them. No more need to use the activate button!

Covenants

HandyNotes: Covenant Sanctum

If you are not familiar with HandyNotes you should check it out. The World of Warcraft is a large place with a lot of NPCs and important locations. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to tell where things are on the default game map. This is where HandyNotes comes in.

Dps

If you find yourself getting lost or trying to remember where things are in your covenant sanctum, HandyNotes has a sub-addon called HandyNotes: Covenant Sanctum. It will add more markers on your map specific to your covenant sanctum. As I keep upgrading and unlocking things in my sanctum, I find this to be very helpful.

Covenant Party!

Covenant Party is an addon that is supposed to add an icon that indicates what covenant your target is a member of. It is also supposed to track the cooldown of covenant abilities for each member of your party. However, upon testing it two weeks after Shadowlands release, it appeared to only work on your frame and does not work with anything other than Blizzard unit frames.

I am hoping for additional updates to this addon because it seems to be very promising. By the time you read this, these issues may be fixed… who knows. The author of the addon posted the following screenshot as an example of what the addon looks like.

Dungeons

QE Mythic+ Dungeon Tips

Questionably Epic (QE) Dungeon Tips is one of my favorite addons.

Whenever you phase into a dungeon, a neat grey box pops up that gives you a 2-3 sentence summary of how to defeat a selected mob or boss. In specific, it will show you tips for the following:

  • Stuff to dodge
  • Mobs you can skip
  • Spells to kick (interrupt)
  • High damage abilities
  • Targets you should CC

The addon is also very smart and will update based on what role you are playing. So, if you are busy getting your tank on… you can use this bad boy to remember what abilities need a cooldown.

This addon is extremely helpful if you watched a guide but always seem to forget what everything does once in combat. If you are just starting to learn the dungeons, I highly recommend it!

MythicDungeonTools

While MythicDungeonTools (MDT) has been around for a while, it makes for a great addon in any expansion. If you haven’t used MDT, it is an addon that shows all the mobs in every dungeon in the game. Even more than that, it allows you to plan out routes and share them with party members.

There are also many members of the community who post their routes for anyone to use. The most popular routes are those created by Dratnos and are posted on raider.io each week for mythic+ players.

Mist of Tirna Scithe Solver

Best Rotation Helper Addon Wow

If you have done the Mist of Tirna Scithe dungeon… there is a good chance your group has failed the guessing game mechanic. Well, fear the fog no more with this helpful little addon.

Mist of Tirna Scithe Solver opens a window upon entering the dungeon which shows all possible symbols. You can then click on a sigil to select it and click again to de-select it.

Instead of running between the pillars several times, you can check a pillar and mark it in the addon and then move on to the next one. Once you have entered the 4 sigils, the correct one will show a green outline. If you enter the sigils incorrectly, it will output an error in your chat.

The Maw

HandyNotes: Shadowlands

Making sure you get the most out of the Maw without an addon is tricky. Fortunately, HandyNotes has another sub-addon to help you out.

HandyNotes: Shadowlands adds markers for rares, treasures, events, and chaotic riftstones to your map of the Maw. This allows you to target mobs that give you the highest amount of reputation, rather than running around killing mobs for no rep. Don’t leave Ve’nari’s Refuge without it.

Oribos

HandyNotes: Oribos

While we are at it, let’s look at another helpful HandyNotes addon — HandyNotes: Oribos.

Just like the other HandyNotes sub-addons, this guy places markers on your map to make navigation much easier. Can’t remember where the bank is? Keep walking into the wrong area while looking for profession trainers? HandyNotes: Oribos is there to help.

Torghast

Mapster

The first addon in the Torghast list is mapster. Technically, it is not a Torghast specific addon. However, it is designed to remove the “fog” of undiscovered areas of the map which is helpful in Torghast.

When you enter a new floor, mapster will load the whole layout instead of the small fraction you usually start with. From there, you can use the layout to have a pretty good idea of where to head to reach the next floor. It can also help keep you from getting lost and circling back to areas you have already visited.

To give you an idea of how easy it is to find the exit based on the map, I have an example below. The exit is usually indicated by a bend in the path and generally appears at the top of a set of stairs.

TorghastStats

TorghastStats is a fun addon that keeps track of the number of deaths, mawrats kills, and total Phantasma earned across your runs. So while it won’t help you play better in Torghast, I guess you could use it to brag about the number of mawrats you have killed (wait, aren’t they already dead and in the Maw…).

To use the addon, you simply install it and then type /tgs stats after you have some runs under your belt.

Other Helpful Addons

World Quest Tracker

Anima is a major part of the Shadowlands expansion and powers everything in your covenant sanctum. If you plan on farming up some anima from world quests, I would recommend that you check out World Quest Tracker (WQT).

While this addon has been around for a while, it is extremely helpful for seeing all the available anima world quests at once.

In addition to changing the icons of the world quests to reflect the rewards they offer, WQT gives a summary of all rewards in the top-left portion of your map. You will notice that it groups anima, conduits/gear, gold, and pet supplies.

Final Thoughts

We are still early in the expansion and many more addons will be created over the next couple of years. My goal is to keep the post up to date with new addons that I test so you don’t have to!

Also, let me know if there are Shadowlands specific addons in one of the categories that I missed.

Thanks for reading!
