I do notice newer Bushmaster models tend to have properly staked bolt carriers, and the older ones tend to have a shallow staking on the bolt carrier. FYI, my bushmaster had a serial of L52XXXX which I bought around 2010/11 as my first AR rifle. I do know it's when they were taken over and no longer 'Bushmaster.' 1978-New series of serial numbers started on 1-3-78 for 760's starting at B 7,400,000. New serial number range for 742's starting at B 6,000,000 1981-Model 760 ADL and BDL designations replaced with 7600 with straight comb stock and impressed checkering. Old games on yosemite. Bolts were changed from 14 small locking lugs to 4 larger locking lugs. I decided to call Bushmaster today and was told by them that they started up a second factory to produce AR15s due to high demand. The new serial numbers were produced last fall at the new production facility. The older L series are still being produced at the original facility. So now you can get a Bushy with either prefix.

Bushmaster Serial Number Search
Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer’s rifle.
Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.
